As promised here is your ICTPD online! I am a very new blogger so please go easy on me! I welcome tricks and tips from anyone. I challenge you to have a go.
The theme this term is on e-trends and in a broad take on that, we began by looking at the biggest e-trend in our school at the moment and that is the new OTLE (online teaching and learning environment) Desire to Learn which will have a major impact on all of us early next year. It was nice to have a sneak preview wasn’t it? Or if you haven’t been able to view it, hopefully you will see it at the session arranged for it.
Your First Mission
Make a connection with a student that you haven’t done before. Then add a comment to this post and tell us about your experience.
Some of you are already doing loads of really neat things with your students and it would be really helpful if you shared some with us so we can all learn from each other. One that I have been developing recently is the use of the ‘chat’ function in skype. I have been encouraging students to all get it downloaded and a neat new feature of the latest skype version is that when a contact comes online there is a little pop-up box that tells you. I have found this really useful if you want to make contact and encourage a student to get engaged – it is instant communication and gives instant feedback or support. It is also less ‘in your face’ than ringing.
Some things you could try:
• etxt
• video conferencing
• online chat
• online conferencing
• contribute to discussion on Blackboard
• blog
• create a wiki with a group of students
• podcast
• vodcast
• skype
I am sure there are other ways!
If you could like some help, please ask Lee, Linzi or myself or…. Google it!
Good luck, look forward to reading your comments!

The 'chat' function on Skype (hitherto mentioned by your good self) is also very handy for the gazillions of times I or the other party can't see or hear each other. Then we can write "help!" a lot....now, about that chocolate fish.....
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy - I'll definitely try some new way of connecting with a student, and I have a couple of students in mind. They've had some not so happy experiences with f2f schools and enjoy being with TCS.
ReplyDeleteAoraki team members have enjoyed the contact they've had with stduents in Blackboard - Margaret doing a great ob. We hope to extend this a bit more next year so we'd better get our heads around OTTLE at some stage!
Hi
ReplyDeleteI think I'd try for that chocolate fish but what to do! I skype weekly and that is a great contact. The student types in his story in the chat function and I cut and paste it into his POL so an easy way to record his writing or is that typing! We are looking at getting some word procesing CD roms so our kids learn to type.
we've had some success here in Christchurch with etexting - seems a good way of connecting with those"hard to get hold of" Young Adults in particular!
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy,
ReplyDeleteAs a student myself -
I did an ICT in teaching course at Canterbury a couple of years ago and we used a blog/discussion forum as a class - I found this great to get to know the others on the course, as I was in Niue at the time, and everyone else spread around NZ. We created Wikis collectively and could ask questions and post assignments online. Our course site looked like a simple version of OTLE and it was excellent. I really enjoyed the course and am looking forward to putting some of my learning into practice!
As a teacher
I used Video Conference for 2 and a half years prior to joining the Correspondence School - I found it great as I could show the more difficult to explain parts of the course on the document camera eg show students how to draw graphs, and get them to collaboratively give an answer to an 'explain' question. I had classes of up to 20 spread around the country at up to 4 different sites.
At TCS -
I use skype chat daily to keep in touch and ask quick questions etc with my senior teacher - I find it very useful
You don't need to send me a chocolate fish, as this is more about how I have used ICT before, and not really about TCS and students!

Hi Sandy
ReplyDeleteI use skype with my autistic students for their oral language development, because it provides a non threatening vehicle to talk (not directly ftf) and also to catch up with our SE staff about the programme generally.
Cheers Alison
I have used Skype to get in touch with an overseas student who was struggling to get work and get into it. I sent him work via email and helped get him started.
ReplyDeleteI also used eTxt to get in touch with a couple of students I struggled to contact and a mother who I needed to talk to but I knew had gone on holiday. She phoned me back quite quickly.
Good morning Sandy!
ReplyDeleteI really do enjoy the Skype 'chat' function as the children I Skype are in Mongolia, Thailand or other exotic places yonder. I find the sound very hard to pick up at times and of course others around me get very tired of "Are you still there?" "Can you hear me?" continually shouted out from within the bay. However the benefits out weigh the frustrations ie capturing running records and watching children working with maths strategies, and just getting to know the children better etc
I've also used e txt with very isolated families. They would ring when their txts alerted them that I needed to speak to them.
Looking forward to what next year brings!
Hi Sandy, I have etxt'd Woody Boakes today re course for next year because there was no mechanism for me to leave a message on their phone this morning. As yet no reply so I am unsure if he has received the txt or not.
